My Approach

My Beliefs

I'm Abby Driver. I've been working as a therapist for over ten years, I'm a neurodivergent transgender woman, an occasional writer and a mother of two kids. I have a strong personal belief in the value of warmth, empathy and compassion, and believe it is crucial that I adapt my way of working to meet your individual needs.  As we progress, we will continue to identify what is and isn’t helpful for you, and so the therapy will become something that we create together. This will be backed up by the rigorous training I've received, and my use of research-supported methodologies.

My Clients

I have worked successfully with clients who have come with a range of issues including depression and anxiety, addiction, relationship problems, compulsive behaviours, and a general desire to develop a fuller understanding and acceptance of themselves.  I am particularly passionate about working with issues of gender and sexuality, ADHD and autism spectrum disorders, and problems arising from technology use including internet, social media or gaming dependencies.

Commitment to Best Practice

I am committed to ensuring that I provide best practice in my work with you and that I continue to develop and improve my skills. To this end, I receive regular supervision both from a local NZAP supervisor and from Dr Stephen Arthey for my Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy work. I engage in regular professional development and ensure that I stay up to date with relevant literature and research.

Getting Started

To get started, simply call me or email me and I'll get in touch to arrange a time for a first session together.  You do not need to tell me anything about your reason for getting in touch during the initial contact unless you wish to do so.  During our first session, I will ask you for some information about your reason for coming, and it will be an opportunity for you to meet me and get a sense of whether or not you think you would like to work together on an ongoing basis.

I look forward to meeting you!
